Common Bathroom Remodeling Mistakes to Avoid

Remodeling your bathroom can be an exciting project. However, there are several pitfalls that you should avoid to save you wasted time, effort, and money during the project. We have put together a list of the most common mistakes made by home-owners when remodeling their bathrooms.

1. Remodeling without a clear vision

Remodeling your bathroom is a project that requires considerable research and planning. It also requires you to have a clear vision of what you are looking to create. You can use images, idea-boards, or even catalogs to convey your vision to the contractors you are working with. Kickstarting a project without a clear, detailed plan is a definite way of jeopardizing it.

2. Not maintaining a consistent theme

It’s easy to become overwhelmed with options when it comes to a new bathroom. Be sure to maintain a consistent theme across the various elements of your bathroom as you plan the remodeling project. It is highly advisable to pick and design around a central theme, for the best possible outcome.

3. Installing the wrong type of flooring

If you are thinking of re-installing the bathroom flooring, be careful to only consider options that are ‘bathroom friendly’. Solid hardwood, engineered wood, and laminate flooring is easily damaged in moist conditions and more difficult to maintain. Natural stone flooring requires regular maintenance in the form of frequent re-sealing. Porcelain and ceramic tiles are usually moisture resistant and work well. Ensure that you select flooring that has anti-skid properties and is easy to clean. Installing the wrong kind of flooring can also compromise the underlying structure of your bathroom.

4. Changing the plan mid-way

Like with any other project, it is highly recommended that you spend as much time as required during the planning stage so that the execution is smooth and quick. Changing the scope of the designs in the midst of the project is sure to add to the timelines, increase the budget, and also lead to a waste of resources.

5. Ignoring the bathroom fan

Proper ventilation is one of the most important factors to consider for a well-designed bathroom. Not installing a fan or not cleaning the existing one can lead to moisture build-up, causing the paint and grout to deteriorate. Most modern bathroom fans are quite powerful and effective with lower noise levels.

6. Rushing the timelines

Bathroom remodeling projects are complex and require at least 6-8 weeks for completion. The timelines may further vary depending on the size of the bathroom, the scope of the project, or the timely availability of materials among other factors. It is important to have a clear understanding of milestones and timelines through discussions with your contractor. Trying to rush the project can lead to sub-optimal outcomes and cause you more trouble in the form of higher repair and/or maintenance costs.
