Getting Your Kitchen Cabinets Right During a Remodel

Cabinets are an extremely important feature of your kitchen. They not only have aesthetic value and enhance the beauty of your kitchen but also perform a valuable function. Kitchen cabinets usually account for a third of the kitchen remodeling costs. Below are some of the things to think about as you plan to remodel your kitchen cabinets.

Remodeling the cabinet exteriors

There are essentially three options for remodeling the kitchen cabinets – refacing, refinishing and renewing. The choice between these usually depends on the budget and the current condition of the kitchen cabinets.

Refacing or resurfacing your kitchen cabinets involves putting new material on top of the existing cabinet frames and replacing doors and drawer fronts. It refers to removing and replacing the top most layer called ‘veneer’ on the surface of the cabinets and drawers to update the finish and color. The hardware including hinges, handles, knobs etc. are also replaced during refacing. Refacing is a quick and inexpensive solution that helps give a new and fresh look to your kitchen. Refinishing cabinets refers to changing the finish, or color, of the existing materials. The only caveat here is that oak cabinets usually cannot be refinished since this will allow the grains to show through the paint.

Both refacing and refinishing are much more affordable options if your kitchen cabinets are generally in good condition and you are looking to maintain the same layout. With both of these options you can still work with your contractor to customize storage as well as layout of some of the cabinets.

Renewing or replacing cabinets refers to a complete replacement of the cabinets. If you are looking to completely overhaul the cabinets and change the layout of your kitchen, renewing may be the way to go. New cabinets may be custom built or readily purchased based on your requirements. Renewing is obviously more expensive than refacing or refinishing.

Remodeling the cabinet interiors

Quality cabinets create ample storage enhancing the functionality and convenience of your kitchen. Remodeling the interiors of kitchen cabinets involved upgrading the storage designs and the internal hardware including drawer rails, shelves, door hinges etc. It is strongly advised to invest in high quality hardware since much of the functionality of your kitchen depends on these.

The most important part of your cabinets is the ‘cabinet box’.  This refers to the skeleton of the cabinet; it is unseen, but it holds everything else up and  needs to be in good repair.

There are several innovative storage solutions available for kitchen cabinets to ensure your kitchen is well organized. While remodeling ensure that your kitchen shelves are in good condition, sturdy and firmly attached. In general, drawers offer much more convenience as compared to shelves in accessing stored materials.

Choosing the right cabinets for your kitchen remodel can be overwhelming when you consider all of the options that are available,It is strongly recommended that you work with an experienced kitchen remodeling contractor who has the expertise to help you get the best outcome from your kitchen remodeling efforts.
